Need to freshen up your home for the spring but don’t know where to even begin? Don’t fret! Just follow our simple steps below to guide you through the process.

Wash the Windows and Doors

Following the messy winter season, windows and patio doors get covered in a film of grime and dirt. To improve your view of the outdoors while brightening your home, wash them down thoroughly. It’s best to do this on a cloudy day so you won’t have any streaks left behind. All you need is a little dish soap, warm water, and a squeegee to get them sparkling. Use a sponge or cloth to clean out the crevices and wipe away any drips.

Clean Up the Exterior

To clean the exterior, we recommend planning a weekend to tackle everything at once since there’s usually a number of areas that need attention after the winter. Start by getting your gutter system cleaned out. You don’t want to have to deal with any water damage after those heavy downpours arrive due to clogged drainage. Also, once you hook up the hose, use a broom and bucket with some soapy water to scrub down the patio, deck, fence, and furniture. This will also help to remove any mildew and lower the risk of wood rot.

Perform Repairs

While you’re cleaning the exterior, it’s an ideal time to inspect for any damage. Broken deck boards, loose handrails or rotted fence posts are common issues that can occur following the long winter months. If you notice any areas of concern, fix them now so you don’t have to worry about them later in the summer.

Prep Your Landscape

Spending a little time on your landscape now can make your summer maintenance much easier as well. Rake away any leaves and dead turf from your lawn. Try to loosen the soil as much as possible while doing this. If it’s still compact, use an aerator machine to help boost the growth of the grassroots. Pull up any weeds with your hands, grabbing from the stem to remove the roots. And finally, sprinkle fresh topsoil throughout, along with a heavy layer of grass seed to thicken it up.

Add a Fresh Coat of Paint

Peeling paint, scuff marks, and general grime can make a home look uncared for. Luckily, adding a fresh coat of paint is a simple, quick and relatively inexpensive way to instantly improve the look of it, both inside and out. If you have areas that could use a new colour or a fresh coat, do it now before the heat and humidity arrive. Planning to list your home in the spring?
